A few weeks ago, my dear friend Clyde, I've changed his name here for his privacy, had a stroke that left him paralyzed on his entire left side and
unable to speak. At 10pm on a Thursday night, Clyde's wife texted us the shocking news. Clyde had collapsed at work with a blood clot in his brain. The doctors tried to remove it, but it was too deep in his brain. At that point, it didn't look good. For Clyde, that news felt like a gut punch.
I sat down, stunned. Fear hit me like a tidal wave. Then I began to praise God and pray. Once my wife and I had pushed back the fear, we called Clyde's wife and prayed with her. I created a prayer chain of friends. Others in our church sent the word out and many were praying.
We asked God to tell us how to pray and to give us scriptures to stand on. The next morning, he did. Others confirmed what we were hearing God say. My pastor went to the hospital that morning and was told by a nurse that the doctor said there was zero percent chance Clyde would ever move his left side.
No chance at all. He would not be able to walk again or use his left arm or hand. But we had God's promises. We felt God saying he was going to heal Clyde. We prayed standing on those promises and prayed throughout that morning and afternoon. I interrupted my work and followed God's heart.
For my friend, nothing else mattered. In the afternoon, our assistant pastor visited Clyde. He was just speaking and saying how we need to declare Clyde's left side is strong when a yellow sock popped into the air. Clyde had lifted his left leg and then his left arm came up.
Several jubilant phone conversations followed and the prayers of many people in our church were answered. Clyde still couldn't speak, so we dug in even more and prayed for God to complete the work he'd begun in Clyde. The next day, my wife and I visited Clyde in the hospital. He greeted us with his trademark smile and shocked us when he said, hallelujah.
Wow. How good is our God? Clyde's speech is coming back more every day, and I feel privileged to have seen such a medically documented miracle. This miracle happened because many people leaned into the heart of God, dropped what they were doing and prayed fervently for one person in need.
Many people had the interruptible heart of Jesus. To hear the full testimony of this miracle by his wife, see the harbor. Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote in Life Together, we must be ready to allow ourselves to be interrupted by God. God will be constantly crossing our paths and canceling our plans by sending us people.
Bonhoeffer is describing the new heart Jesus died to give us. It's a heart responsive to the voice and to the nudges of God.
