I was in the Air Force when my mother married my 2nd stepfather. After living with one abusive, alcoholic stepfather, I was pretty wary of this guy. But he turned out to be different.

One of the worst days of my life proved that to me. After a university-related trip to Arizona, I returned to West Virginia University and learned the woman I was dating had my car and refused to answer my calls. It was summertime and I didn’t have an apartment there then. And I had no way to get home – over 150 miles away.

Feeling betrayed and embarrassed, I called home. My stepfather answered.
After my mother got home from work at midnight, my stepfather told her, “Let’s go get Dave.” When they picked me up at 3 a.m., he gave me a big hug and we immediately turned around to go home. He didn’t lecture me. We talked about everything BUT my poor choice of girlfriends.

I’ll never forget that night. It was one of the most selfless acts of love I have ever experienced. I remember watching the moon, as I turned to the window to hide my tears. I felt so loved as we drove through the night.
And he never said a word about how tired he was when we arrived home. He simply got his lunch pail and went to work.

From that day on, I felt like I was his son. And so I was, all the rest of his life. He was one of the greatest influences in my life – a true servant of God.

He taught me how to live a significant life. A life of love and service.

Tim Tebow, one of the best college quarterbacks ever, tells the story of getting off the bus in front of 20-40,000 cheering fans at every home game at the University of Florida. People cheered him and called his name. Many wore his jersey number. His first thought was sometimes pride, but he quickly pushed that aside.

He continues, “I hope you're successful There's nothing wrong with being successful but success is just about you But significance is about other people you see.”

Merriam Webster
Significant - having or likely to have influence or effect : important
significance implies a quality or character that should mark a thing as important but that is not self-evident and may or may not be recognized.

You can live a totally obscure life with no great accomplishments, no great fame, no great wealth, and no great power, but have lived a life of great significance.

Your significance may not be evident. You may never be recognized publicly or receive any awards.

The greater question is not what people think, but what will Jesus think when you arrive in heaven and stand before him to receive your reward for the life you lived on earth?

Won’t it be awesome to hear Jesus say, “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master?” MATTHEW 25:21

The servant in Matthew 25:21, was given 2 talents and told to invest them while the master went on a trip. He did and he doubled the master’s money. For that, his master commended him and promised to give him more responsibility.

God gives us talents (not money, but abilities) and he asks us to invest in serving others. As we do, he will give us greater assignments to love and serve others.

The Significance of Jesus
Jesus, the most significant man to ever walk the earth, was significant, not because he was famous or even because of the many miracles God did through him. Jesus’ life was significant because he humbled himself. He left God’s side in heaven, came to earth as a tiny human baby, and he lived as a servant to men – even allowing them to murder him so through his death they could have life.

Matthew 20:28 AMP
…the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many [paying the price to set them free from the penalty of sin].”

Jesus said that in the world, kings and great men lord it over the people.
“But this is not your calling. You will lead by a different model. The greatest one among you will live as one called to serve others without honor. The greatest honor and authority is reserved for the one who has a servant heart.” Luke 22:26 TPT

Jesus was the most significant man who ever lived because of his sacrifice, his service to all mankind. Your significance, and mine, flow from the love of God in our hearts, revealed through our service to others.
Matthew 24:46
What joy and blessing will come to that faithful servant when the master comes home to find him serving with excellence!
