We live in a culture that rejects the idea of absolute right or wrong. A recent survey by Christian researcher George Barn revealed that only 25% of all American adults believe that absolute moral truth exists.
Most people, including many Christians, are making decisions based on what they think is right at the time, and their idea of right and wrong changes with time and circumstances.
Jesus taught us that building on anything other than the Word of God is like building a house on sand. When life's storms come, and they will, what we build will collapse. This is John, chapter 7, verses 24 to 27. God's Word is the only rock, the only firm foundation upon which we can make good life decisions.
Psalm 119:105 says, Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Just as a lamp or a flashlight gives enough light to show you where to take the next step on a dark night, Scripture illuminates the next step. When we can't see the way forward.
God's Word is both a lamp to my feet, enough light for the next step, for the small decisions, but it is also a light to my path. God gives us greater light to reveal which path to take. We come to many decision trees in life, big life decisions, and we need God to show us which way to go.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 reminds us that all scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. God's Word is God speaking to us, to teach us, to convict us when we do wrong and to show us the correct way forward.
